David Silva is delighted for his former Manchester City club-mate Vincent Kompany, who is flourishing as Bayern Munich coach.

Kompany took over at Bayern in 2024, after suffering relegation from the Premier League with Burnley.

The ex-Man City captain, who has also coached Anderlecht, led Bayern to the Bundesliga title last term, and won the German Super Cup to start this season.

His Bayern team sit nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and hold a 6-1 lead over Atalanta in their Champions League last-16 tie.

And Silva, who spent almost a decade playing alongside Kompany at Man City, says it was clear the Belgian would always go on to be a coach.

"Even back when he was a player, you could tell he wanted to be a coach," Silva told TZ Munchen.

"He analyses everything very precisely, has a way of communicating with the players, and is doing an outstanding job overall. He's definitely a contender for the Champions League title.

"I'm very happy for him. He has everything under control, he thinks deeply about things, and works incredibly hard. Vincent always had the makings of a coach.

"Now he's landed at a club like Bayern, which is used to winning – an ideal combination. He's young, hungry, and pays attention to every detail. At the same time, he instils confidence in his players."

Kompany has overseen 96 games as Bayern boss, winning 72 of those and suffering only 11 defeats.

Of teams in Europe's top five leagues, only Barcelona (291) have scored more goals than Bayern (289) across all competitions since the start of last season.

Bayern's 249.6 expected goals, meanwhile, is more than any other team from Europe's top five leagues.

"You can see that everyone is pulling in the same direction," Silva said.

"Bayern's results and this desire to always want to top them are a very strong trademark of his."
