Newcastle United climbed up to seventh in the Premier League table as they earned a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace to put their recent losing run behind them.

After back-to-back league defeats against Coventry City and Aston Villa, Newcastle did the damage in the second half through strikes from William Osula and Harvey Barnes.

Palace, however, started well and came close to taking the lead after three minutes. Adam Wharton chipped a dangerous cross from a free-kick, sparking a scramble in front of goal as Jean-Philippe Mateta twice tried to bundle home, only to be denied by Lukas Hornicek's sharp reflexes.

Spurred on by a lively Selhurst Park crowd, the hosts continued to push forward, registering eight shots inside the opening 26 minutes – their most in the first half of a Premier League match this season – though Mateta, Daichi Kamada and Dwight McNeil could not properly test Hornicek.

Yeremy Pino proved a threat just before the break, darting an inviting cross into the box that just narrowly evaded the onrushing Axel Disasi before Hornicek was able to smother.

Pierre Sage's side were quickly made to regret spurning those chances as the Magpies emerged from the break a different side, taking the lead in the 47th minute through Osula, who powered home first-time off a pinpoint Jacob Murphy cross.

Willock thought he had put Newcastle further ahead six minutes later as he raced onto Joelinton's weighted through-ball and slid a tidy finish past Walter Benitez, but the goal was ruled out for offside against the Magpies' midfielder after a VAR review.

After consistent pressure, the visitors eventually found their second through a superb attacking move – Nico Gonzalez held up the ball strongly before finding Amar Dedic, who teed up Barnes in space for an emphatic finish into the left corner.

Palace began to show signs of life midway through the second half, with Wharton testing Hornicek with a curling effort just past the hour mark.

The Newcastle goalkeeper was called upon again moments later, diving at full stretch to keep out a swerving, long-range strike from Dario Osorio to secure three points and preserve the Magpies' clean sheet.

Magpies flex their muscles in the second half

Newcastle might not have got off to a superb start to the season, but Sunday's victory could provide the spark for a turnaround, with the Magpies producing a clinical second-half display to take all three points.

Osula continued his fine form, taking his tally to seven goals in his last 13 Premier League appearances, having managed just two in his first 50 matches in the competition.

Murphy also made his mark, registering his 31st Premier League assist for Newcastle with the opener. That moved him level with Robert Lee in joint-third on the club's all-time list in the competition, behind only Nolberto Solano (54) and Alan Shearer (35).

Barnes was another standout performer. Since the start of last season, he has been involved in 12 Premier League goals (nine goals, three assists), with only Bruno Guimaraes (14) registering more for Newcastle in that period.

The visitors were ruthlessly efficient in front of goal, scoring with both of their shots on target. Remarkably, Newcastle have now converted 100% of their shots on target in three of their last four Premier League matches in which they have scored at least twice, doing so against Palace, Bournemouth and Tottenham.

For Palace, meanwhile, the defeat will only add to the pressure on Sage. The Eagles have now conceded 50 Premier League goals in 2026, at least four more than any other side in the competition, though they did register an expected goals (xG) total of 1.69 from their 17 shots, but only four of those were on target.
