Steve Clarke was left "devastated" after it was confirmed Billy Gilmour will miss Scotland's World Cup campaign.

Gilmour sustained a knee injury during Scotland's 4-1 friendly victory over Curacao at Hampden Park on Saturday.

The Napoli midfielder was taken off in the 42nd minute, and Scotland subsequently confirmed Gilmour will now miss the tournament.

Scotland are making their ninth appearance at the World Cup finals, and their first since 1998, which is three years prior to Gilmour being born.

"I am devastated for Billy because he has been an integral part of our World Cup qualifying campaign. The timing of this injury is so, so cruel, and we all feel for him," Clarke said.

"He knows what we all think of him as a footballer and a person, and while no words will give him any comfort, I am certain Billy will have many major tournaments ahead of him in the future."

Gilmour has played 46 times for Scotland, scoring twice.

Tyler Fletcher, the son of former Manchester United stalwart Darren, is among the options to replace Gilmour.

Clarke said: "I've got Connor Barron, Andy Irving, Lennon Miller, and you see for yourself how good young Tyler is.

"The three that I mentioned are on standby. Obviously, Tyler joined us this week. He's trained well this week, so he's a little bit closer than the other three, but I'd need to have a big discussion with my staff and decide the best way to go."

Scotland will take on Haiti, Morocco and Brazil in their World Cup group, as they aim to make it to the knockout stage for the first time.
