Liam Delap admitted to making a "silly" error after his premature celebrations cost him a goal in Chelsea's 4-0 rout of Hull City in the FA Cup.

Liam Rosenior's team eased into the fifth round of the competition with a dominant performance at MKM Stadium on Friday, with Pedro Neto scoring a hat-trick.

Estevao was also on target for the Blues, and Delap would have had a goal if not for a stunning lapse in concentration.

With the game still goalless 21 minutes in, Delap charged down a clearance from Hull goalkeeper Dillon Phillips, sending the ball spinning towards goal.

Delap ran off as if to celebrate, only for the ball to clip the underside of the crossbar and bounce out, with the striker hurriedly running to the rebound but seeing his follow-up shot smothered by the recovering Philips.

Addressing the miss in an interview with BBC Sport, Delap said: "I thought it went in, and then I was waiting for the ref to blow his whistle.

"Obviously, I shouldn't have waited for the ref to blow his whistle. It's silly from me, but yeah, crazy."

Delap did register three assists – two for Neto and one for Estevao – to become the first Chelsea player with three assists in a single match since Enzo Fernandez in November 2024, against Noah in the Conference League.

Cole Palmer also achieved the feat against Wolves at the start of last season, but before that duo, the most recent Chelsea player to do so was Cesc Fabregas in April 2016, against Bournemouth.

Rosenior was impressed by Delap's selflessness in the final third, saying: "To be a number nine, especially in the system that we play, it's not always about yourself.

"It's about bringing other people into play. It's about sometimes making sacrifice runs, so other players get the space."
