Michael Carrick expects to be in charge of Manchester United for their next game.

United's miserable run of form continued with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where Lisandro Martinez saw red.

The Red Devils' winless streak has now stretched to nine games, which is their longest such run since 1988.

Many pundits and fans felt Carrick was going to be sacked in the wake of United's defeat to Bournemouth last week, but he remained in charge.

And Carrick thinks he will be in place for United's Champions League clash with Roma on Tuesday, at the least.

When asked if that would be the case, Carrick told TNT Sports: "Yes.

"There is a lot of emotion, we're a great football club, and we want to win football matches. The supporters come, make a lot of effort, pay a lot of money to watch us play. You can see the boys had the game in the right place and things have gone against us.

"Things have gone against us, and gone against us in a big way. Unravelled quickly. A lot of emotion right now.

"We have got to move forward and take the things that worked for us today. A lot of the good things, especially in the first half and use that moving forward."

United played well in the first half, but Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo missed big chances, while Matheus Cunha had a goal disallowed.

"I think it was as good as we've played for some time in the first half," added Carrick, who said he did not feel let down by Martinez, who picked up two bookings in quick succession after Morgan Rogers had put Chelsea ahead.

"We looked dangerous, we looked fluid, we looked like a good team and we looked really dangerous.

"We could, should, have scored one or two, maybe three even with the chances and the spaces that we created, and then the game gets away from us.

"The second half got away from us, which is something we've got to deal with, you know.

"Sometimes you get setbacks in games and you've got to deal with that better, you know, from being in such a good place in the first half.

"The two halves of football probably couldn't be further apart in some ways."

The defeat left United at risk of falling into the bottom three in the Premier League, but Carrick does not feel talk of a relegation battle is reasonable.

"Not for me, no," Carrick said. "We've got to keep moving forward and winning games, simple as that.

"There's no words that I'm going to explain to you now that makes any difference, it's not going to change it.

"We've got to move forward and win football matches, it's as simple as that."
