West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen conceded that his team's 1-1 draw with Brighton on Sunday felt like a loss having conceded in second-half stoppage time.

Bowen slid home the opening goal in the 73rd minute after good work from Callum Wilson, but the Hammers could not continue their upward trajectory in the Premier League.

In the 91st minute, Georginio Rutter fired beyond Alphonse Areola to seal a share of the spoils, a result that also moved Brighton up to seventh in the table.

Indeed, all four of Brighton's shots on target in this match – including their equaliser – were recorded from the 89th minute onwards.

It was the first time they had not landed a shot on target through 88 minutes of a Premier League game since March 2022 against Tottenham, leaving Bowen frustrated.

"I am gutted, it feels like loss. We did so much to get into the lead. We sat back too far and invited the pressure," Bowen told Sky Sports.

"You wanted to protect the lead, but we got them too much. We got a point, but it feels like a loss.

"We limited most of the games, and they didn't have lots to do in goal. The way the manager wants to play, we have all bought into that.

"We got ourselves into a good position and nearly had more goals, and then they managed to equalise. They have scored lots of late goals against us in the past."

It is a familiar theme for West Ham, with only Newcastle United and Leeds United (six) conceding more 90th minute goals in the top-flight this season than the Hammers (five).

Brighton will perhaps feel hard done by not taking all three points, having registered an expected goals (xG) total of 1.7 from 22 shots to West Ham's 1.1 from 14 attempts.

However, the Seagulls' struggles against those in the bottom half of the Premier League came back to haunt them at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton have now failed to win any of their last six Premier League home games against opponents starting the day in the relegation zone (six draws), with their last such victory coming in May 2023 versus Southampton.

"We definitely wanted more, but in the end, we didn't deserve more because we didn't play with energy and intensity in the first half," Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said.

"We deserved to concede a goal, and we reacted well. In the end, we have to be honest, and we didn't give our best performance.

"We will reflect and analyse, and hopefully we will start the games better. Overall, it was something we didn't expect, but we have to face it.

"It was a different opponent with a different approach, that is not the easiest way to break through."
