Brighton 2-0 Brentford: Gomez and Gross strike to secure second place
Brighton climbed to second in the Premier League table with a routine 2-0 victory over 10-man Brentford at the Amex Stadium.
Diego Gomez was once again the architect of the Seagulls' success, producing another stunning long-range strike before Brentford's hopes of mounting a challenge were severely hindered when Igor Thiago was dismissed for violent conduct midway through the first half.
Pascal Gross then doubled Brighton's lead from the penalty spot, and the Bees simply had no answer as the contest was effectively settled before the break.
Brighton started on the front foot, with Maxim De Cuyper drawing first blood in the battle for momentum, only to direct his header over the crossbar.
Gomez soon grabbed the headlines, though. Having already scored a string of spectacular goals this season, the Paraguayan produced another moment of brilliance as he arrowed a stunning left-footed effort into the top-left corner beyond the helpless Caoimhin Kelleher.
Brentford's afternoon then unravelled further when Thiago was sent off following a VAR review after being adjudged to have caught Chema Andres in the face with force.
To add to the visitors' woes, on what was their 200th Premier League match, Brighton were awarded a penalty when Keane Lewis-Potter was penalised for grappling Luka Vuskovic from a corner.
Gross stepped up and confidently dispatched his 42nd-minute spot-kick into the top-right corner, giving the Seagulls a commanding advantage heading into the interval.
Brighton continued to dictate proceedings after the restart.
De Cuyper twice threatened to add a third goal, first sending an acrobatic effort narrowly off target before glancing a header wide of the same post moments later.
Yasin Ayari was then presented with several opportunities to extend the lead, but the Swede was unable to make them count, seeing one effort deflected over, another drift wide and a third comfortably gathered by Kelleher.

After five consecutive away trips across three different competitions, there may have been expectations of a leggy performance from a Brighton side that has perhaps exceeded even its own expectations this season.
However, it was anything but, as Fabian Hurzeler's side extended their impressive run.
The press remained relentless, and the Seagulls have now scored in nine of their 10 Premier League matches this campaign, remaining the competition's highest scorers with 26 goals.
Just as impressively, Brentford were shut out for the first time this season and were restricted to no shots on target.
Not only has no side scored more goals than Brighton this term, but no team has kept more clean sheets than their seven. Hurzeler's men have also won every league match in which they have recorded a shutout.
The Seagulls finished with 2.2 expected goals (xG) to Brentford's 0.73, underlining their dominance, and they'll fancy their chances of maintaining that momentum when they travel to Hull City after the international break.
Brighton have picked up 22 points from their first 10 Premier League matches this season (W7 D1 L2), their most ever across the first 10 matches of a top-flight campaign.
Brentford, meanwhile, return to the Gtech Community Stadium to face Everton still searching for consistency, having won just one of their last five Premier League matches.
