Noah Lolesio will miss Australia's upcoming series with the British and Irish Lions after undergoing neck surgery.

Lolesio, who is the Wallabies' first-choice fly-half, picked up the injury in Australia's lone warm-up game against Fiji on Sunday.

The 25-year-old was carried off the pitch in the 61st minute of their thrilling 21-18 victory, and he was initially cleared of any serious injury and released from hospital.

However, Rugby Australia confirmed on Tuesday that Lolesio required surgery to repair the issue and would subsequently miss their series with the Lions.

"Rugby Australia and the Wallabies can confirm Noah Lolesio has had successful surgery today," a media statement read.

"Lolesio sustained an on-field injury in the second half of the Test against Fiji in Newcastle on Sunday.

"After being initially discharged from hospital on Sunday night, Lolesio was readmitted for surgery this afternoon following a further medical follow-up.

"He is expected to make a full recovery and will spend a period of time away from the game during his rehabilitation."

Lolesio had become a regular since head coach Joe Schmidt took the reins with Australia in January last year, starting 12 of the 14 Tests under the 59-year-old.

However, his absence will now likely see Ben Donaldson take the number 10 shirt, with Tom Lynagh another option at fly-half.

"Firstly, we were relieved that Noah was up and moving well when he returned to the team hotel after his initial hospital visit in Newcastle on Sunday," Schmidt added.

"Further to that, it's an added relief for everyone, especially his family, that successful surgery now has him on the road to recovery."

Schmidt is set to name a new squad to face the Lions this Friday, with the possibility of recalls for the experienced pairing of Bernard Foley and James O'Connor.

The first Test between Australia and the Lions takes place on July 19 in Brisbane.
