Naomi Osaka was left stunned and shaken by Sorana Cirstea's angry reaction after their match at the Australian Open.

Osaka, a two-time champion in Melbourne, prevailed 6-3 4-6 6-2 in the second-round clash on Thursday.

However, there was a frosty reaction from Cirstea as the duo shook hands at the net afterwards.

Cirstea, who was making her final Australian Open appearance ahead of her retirement later this year, seemed to have been infuriated by Osaka shouting "come on" to herself between points.

Asked how she made it through the match, a noticeably irritated Osaka quipped: "Apparently, a lot of 'come ons' that she was angry about. But whatever.

"I tried to play well, and I think I hit a lot of unforced errors, but I tried my best.

"She's a great player, I think this was her last Australian Open, so I'm sorry she was mad about it."

Osaka, who will face Maddison Inglis in round three, was then asked if Cirstea's issue stemmed from the way she had been pumping herself up.

"I think so. But I mean, she could have asked me. I’m sorry," said the four-time grand slam champion.

In the later matches at Melbourne Park, world number five Elena Rybakina breezed past Varvara Gracheva 7-5 6-2.

Number 10 seed Belinda Bencic, however, was on the end of a shock loss to world number 126 Nikola Bartunkova, who overcame a second-set bagel to triumph 6-3 0-6 6-4.
