Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph took nine wickets between them for West Indies in a thrilling start to the first Test against Australia, before the tourists fought back late on.

Seales dismissed five and Joseph scalped four as Australia were skittled for 180 runs at Kensington Oval in Barbados, but a late flurry of wickets then left the Windies teetering at 53-4 by stumps on day one.

The first two wickets of the day went to Joseph, who trapped Sam Konstas (3) lbw following a review early on before Cameron Green (3) edged his 10th-over delivery to Justin Greaves.

Usman Khawaja (47), Travis Head (59) and Pat Cummins (28) were the only Australia batters to score more than 11 runs as the West Indies' pacemen continued to dominate.

The final five Australian wickets fell for just 57 runs to leave the hosts in an excellent position, though they failed to defend it when given an hour and a half at the crease to end the day.

Mitchell Starc had Kraigg Brathwaite (4) and John Campbell (7) caught within the first seven overs, then a Cummins snorter accounted for Keacy Carty (20) before Jomel Warrican was bowled cleanly for a duck by Josh Hazlewood.

West Indies will resume with a 123-run deficit on Thursday, as they target just a second red-ball victory over Australia in 18 meetings between the teams.

Data Debrief: Five-star Seales

Seales finished with figures of 5-60 on day one of the series opener, which he has only bettered in one previous red-ball innings – going 6-61 against South Africa last year.

It was just his third five-for in red-ball cricket, also boasting figures of 5-55 against Pakistan in 2021.

Joseph, meanwhile, reached stumps 4-46, only taking more wickets in a single Test innings three times (five against both Australia and South Africa, and seven versus Australia, all in 2024).
