Arsenal defender Gabriel signs long-term contract extension
Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has signed a new contract, which will keep him at the club until 2029.
The 27-year-old had been under contract until 2027, though Mikel Arteta clearly wanted to underline his importance to the team.
He has been an important player for the club since joining from Lille in 2020, having made 210 appearances in all competitions.
Since 2022, Gabriel has formed a strong partnership with William Saliba, with both proving a threat from set-pieces – since joining the club Gabriel has scored 17 league goals.
Gabriel has, in fact, scored the most goals, most headers (12) and played in the most clean sheets (57) of all Premier League defenders since his debut.
"I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I'm so happy and I've learned a lot," Gabriel said, as quoted by BBC Sport.
"I'm so proud of myself, it's an amazing journey, and I'm so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too.
"Arsenal is an amazing club and I'm so proud to sign a new contract. I love the supporters, my team-mates, I love this stadium. I'm so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future."
The Brazilian missed the final two months of the season due to injury, with his absence damaging Arsenal's campaign.
Without the defender, the Gunners dropped away from the Premier League title race and were eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain at the semi-final stage.
Among all Premier League defenders, since his debut Gabriel has:
