Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United: Riviere red not costly as visitors dig deep
Arsenal missed the opportunity to make up ground on their Women's Super League title rivals as they drew 0-0 with Manchester United, who had Jayde Riviere sent off.
Riviere was given her marching orders after committing two bookable offences, the second of which was a late challenge on Caitlin Foord in the 65th minute.
But United stood firm against a barrage of Arsenal shots at the Emirates Stadium, with Phallon Tullis-Joyce remaining unbeaten between the sticks to keep the gap between the teams at one point.
Arsenal bossed proceedings from the first whistle, with Kim Little and Olivia Smith missing their best first-half chances. The former struck the side netting from Katie McCabe's cutback, while the latter was denied by Tullis-Joyce at close quarters.
The pattern of the game barely changed when Riviere was sent off, with a combination of Anna Sandberg and Tullis-Joyce keeping out Alessia Russo's shot from inside the six-yard box.
Tullis-Joyce also had to block an inventive backheel from Stina Blackstenius, while Hanna Lundkvist came close to putting through her own net, and Victoria Pelova had an effort kept out by the United goalkeeper five minutes into stoppage time.
Having been forced to settle for a single point, Arsenal could find themselves 10 adrift of leaders Manchester City by the end of the weekend's action. Second-placed Chelsea are a point ahead of the Gunners ahead of their meeting with West Ham on Sunday.

Data Debrief: Arsenal fail to make dominance count
It was one-way traffic for much of Saturday's game, with Arsenal firing off 25 shots to United's four, with the Gunners also winning the expected goals (xG) battle by 2.3 to 0.43.
That is the most shots Arsenal have attempted in a single WSL match this campaign, surpassing the 22 they recorded in a 3-1 win at Everton last month.
However, Renee Slegers' team only hit the target with six of those attempts, with Marc Skinner's visitors managing just one shot on target on the head coach's 100th WSL match in charge.
