Jasmine Paolini and Emma Navarro claimed dominant victories in their opening matches at the Stuttgart Open.

World number six Paolini dispatched home hope Eva Lys, who made waves at the Australian Open earlier this year, in just over an hour on Tuesday.

Paolini won 6-2 6-1 and will now face another German in the round of 16, in the form of Jule Niemeier.

"[Lys] is such a nice girl, and I'm sorry [to] you guys," Paolini said in her on-court interview after beating Lys, gaining applause and laughter from the crowd.

"I have to do my job, as well as I can!"

World number 11 Navarro then cruised to a 6-3 6-0 victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia to mark her tournament debut in style.

Navarro, who will face Jelena Ostapenko in the next round, was delighted to get the job done quickly, having gone the distance on plenty of occasions already this season.

"I’ve had a lot of long matches this year, and a lot of three-sets," Navarro said.

"To get it done a little bit quicker feels good. Proud of my form. It’s my first tournament on red clay this year, so I’m leaning into it and having some fun out here."

Data Debrief: Haddad Maia's dismal run

With the likes of Iga Swiatek and Mirra Andreeva in action on Wednesday, Paolini and Navarro took the chance to lay down early markers.

The latter had lost twice to Haddad Maia on clay last year, but the American turned the tide on this occasion.

In the process, she inflicted a ninth straight defeat on Haddad Maia since the Brazilian reached the third round of the Australian Open.

Navarro did not lose on her serve as she powered 24 winners to Haddad Maia's eight, with the American dropping only five points in the second set.
